Topographical Surveys in West Sussex
Ambler Group carries out topographical surveys across West Sussex from our head office in Horsham. Our surveyors capture levels, features and boundaries with robotic total stations and GNSS, and deliver CAD drawings ready for design, planning and setting out.
We survey everything from single plots and extensions to large greenfield sites, business parks and coastal land, and because we are utility surveyors too, buried services and drainage can go on the same drawing.

Find out moreWhy design starts with a topographical survey
OS mapping and old drawings do not give levels, accurate footprints, trees or neighbouring heights. Design from them and you risk floor levels that do not work, drainage that will not fall, retaining walls nobody allowed for and planning drawings that have to be redone.
West Sussex sites make accurate levels especially important: very flat, low-lying land on the coastal plain around Chichester, Worthing and Shoreham, where small level differences decide flood risk; rolling Weald clay country around Horsham, Crawley and Burgess Hill with streams, hedgerows and mature oaks; and steeper ground on the South Downs and High Weald, much of it inside the South Downs National Park or the High Weald National Landscape.

Architects, engineers, developers and contractors use our topographical surveys at every stage – from site purchase and feasibility to planning, detailed design and setting out.
Feasibility and purchase
An early topographical survey shows what a site can take before you buy or commit to a design.
Planning and Building Regulations
Accurate levels, boundaries, trees and neighbouring heights for planning drawings, flood risk assessments and Building Regulations packages.
Detailed design
A 3D surface and full detail for engineers designing roads, drainage, earthworks and foundations.
Setting out and as-built
Control left on site for setting out, and as-built surveys at the end of the job for handover.
What your topographical survey includes
- Spot levels and contours across the site, to Ordnance Datum
- Buildings, walls, fences, kerbs, paths, hardstanding and road markings
- Trees with trunk diameter, canopy spread and height
- Manhole and gully covers with cover levels (invert levels on request)
- Overhead lines, poles, lighting columns and street furniture
- Building heights, eaves, ridges and street elevations where needed
- CAD drawings (DWG/DXF) on OS National Grid, with PDF plots
- 3D surface or model for earthworks and design on request
We survey with robotic total stations and Emlid Reach RS3 GNSS receivers, with 3D laser scanning available for complex buildings and structures.

Topographical Surveys in West Sussex | Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Which areas of West Sussex do you cover?
A: We cover the whole of West Sussex, with local pages for Horsham, Crawley and Gatwick, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill, Worthing and Chichester. Our head office is in Horsham, and our southern teams also work across the rest of Sussex, Surrey and the South East.
Q2: What does a topographical survey include?
A: A topographical survey records the levels and features of a site: spot heights and contours, buildings, walls, fences, kerbs, paths, trees, covers, street furniture and overhead lines. We can add building heights, street elevations, floor levels and a 3D surface where the design needs them.
Q3: What coordinate system will the survey be in?
A: Our surveys are tied to OS National Grid and levelled to Ordnance Datum Newlyn using GNSS, so they line up with OS mapping, other surveys and your design. We can also work to a local site grid if your project uses one.
Q4: How much does a topographical survey cost?
A: Topographical surveys are priced on the size and complexity of the site, the level of detail needed, access, and any extras such as building heights or a 3D model. Send us a site plan or marked-up aerial and we will come back with a fixed quote, usually the same or next working day.
Q5: Can you add underground services to the topographical survey?
A: Yes. Because we are utility surveyors too, we can add a PAS128 utility survey and drainage survey to the same drawing, so buried services and surface features are shown together.
